The Hub Presents Report to the Government of West Bengal

At the recent International Delta Summit, a full report on the Hub’s Hydrodynamics Survey along the embankments of Kumirmari Island, Gosaba was officially presented to Mr Prabhat Mishra, Principal Secretary, Department of Irrigation & Waterways, Government of West Bengal.

The Hub’s Ms. Sumana Banjeree and Prof. Tuhin Ghosh present the report to Mr Mishra (Ananya Ghatak)

The report is exclusively available to the Department of Irrigation & Waterways with a redacted version published as a policy brief.

Presenting the report to Mr Prabhat Mishra provided a sense of accomplishment as we delivered research findings aligned with the interests of a policymaker to try to address issues faced by delta dwellers in the Indian Sundarban.
— Ms Sumana Banerjee, Living Deltas Hub

The Hydrodynamics Survey was conducted as Mr Mishra had previously expressed his concerns to Hub members around embankment health and the need for evidence-based decision-making in embankment reconstruction and maintenance.

Using an innovative method, researchers in the Living Deltas Hub quantified the exposure of the island's embankments to current and wave forcing and gathered community perceptions of the causes of the coastal erosion and flooding.

Using innovative methods, including the use of Mini Buoys, and RBR Solo D Wave loggers the study quantified the exposure of the island's embankments to current and wave forcing and gathered community perceptions of the causes of the coastal erosion and flooding.
