Young people around the world have taken a leading role in calling for action to address the climate emergency that is set to worsen during their lifetimes. In contrast to the agency of young people, older people are viewed as vulnerable to the rising temperatures and extreme weather events caused by climactic changes. 

The fourth seminar in Living Deltas Delta Dialogue Series will draw on research and practice to challenge common public and policy assumptions about older and younger people and the climate crisis. Our speakers Javeria Afzal (HelpAge International), Shripathi Hadigal (Restless Development), Ngoc-Anh Pham (Youth4Climate) and Siobhan Warrington (Living Deltas) will make the case for an intergenerational approach to advocacy and action to respond to the crisis facing different generations today and in the future. Our speakers will each deliver a short presentation, followed by a panel discussion.

Our Speakers

Javeria Afzal is HelpAge International's Global Climate Change Advisor, based in Islamabad, Pakistan. With over 15 years of experience in developing and implementing sectoral programmes on resilience and adaptation, and disaster risk management, she has expertise in strategic planning, inclusion, advocacy and knowledge management. Her interests lie in intergenerational solidarity in climate change, inclusive early warning systems, and income security for all. She is currently working on movement-building of older people on climate change and championing their unique abilities and actions to fight climate catastrophe. Find out more.

Shripathi Hadigal is a Resource Mobilization Manager at Restless Development with a focus on Climate Change. Restless Development is an international NGO working to support the collective power of young people to demand and deliver a just and sustainable world for all. Prior to Restless Development, Shripathi managed programs across India and Sub-Saharan Africa, working with local partners, focused on the sustainable energy and development nexus. He also co-founded a venture to support sustainable farming practices. Shripathi has completed a Masters in Space Studies from the International Space University, France, and has an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, India.

Ngoc-Anh Pham is the current leader of the Youth4Climate Policy Working Group in Vietnam. She has special interests in bridging knowledge and generational gaps through careful research and creative communication. Her current project focuses on engaging and empowering younger generations to actively participate in the national decision-making process on youth and climate change. She was a writer of the Special Report: Youth for Climate Action 2022 and a curator of the Youth4Climate Learning Hub. Having worked on projects which sit at the juncture of a generational divide, Ngoc-Anh wants to continue pushing the envelope when it comes to connecting diverse groups of people. In her free time, she also engages in creative projects to tell the stories of young climate leaders to a wider audience.

Siobhan Warrington is a Senior Research Associate at Newcastle University working full time on the Living Deltas Hub where she coordinates a programme of research in rural delta regions of Bangladesh and Vietnam that explores older and younger, women’s and men’s experiences of environmental change. Siobhan has over 25 years’ experience of working with civil society organisations across the globe to record and communicate the first-hand experiences of those living with poverty, displacement, environmental change, and HIV. She is a feminist researcher, specialising in collaborative oral history and visual methods, with an interest in representation and the value of lived experience.
